What exactly is AI (artificial intelligence)?

How is AI currently used?
Today, AI is used extensively in a variety of applications that range in sophistication. Popular AI implementations include recommendation algorithms that suggest what you might like next and chatbots that appear on websites or in the form of smart speakers (such as Alexa or Siri).
